Two vehicles totaled in collision near Kmart
An elderly woman was sent to the hospital Friday afternoon following a collision that totaled two vehicles. According to Morganton Public Safety Officer Jeff Gillstrap, around 3:53 p.m., Iris Fox was traveling south on North Green Street when she attempted to make a left-hand turn into the Kmart shopping plaza.

Lady Patriots win playoff opener for 8th straight year
For most coaches, starting two freshman guards in the playoffs against a quality opponent wouldn’t be the most ideal situation. However, in the No. 12 seed Freedom girls basketball team’s case, both youngsters did just fine. Amaryah Corpening and Ariyana Williams were two of the team’s four players to score in double figures to help the Lady Patriots put away No. 21 seed North Buncombe 70-58 in the first round of the NCHSAA 3A playoffs Monday.

Fire consumes mobile home in eastern Burke County
HICKORY – When Misty Sheffield left her house for Granite Falls Friday, she left everything in shipshape. However, she returned to numerous firefighters in her front yard trying to extinguish what was left of her mobile home. Icard Township Fire & Rescue Chief Brand Lingerfelt said when crews arrived on the scene at 3404 South Fork Ave. around 5:46 p.m.

Council votes to cut public comment session from televised broadcast
Last Monday, the Morganton City Council adopted a new public comment policy for city council meetings which changed the start time of the meeting from 6 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. In doing so, the council bumped the public comment section from the regular televised broadcast of the meeting which will still begin at 6 p.m.

Brewery Fonta Flora opens in Morganton
Morganton’s second brewery opened its doors Saturday serving eight selections of ales, lagers and cider. Brothers Mark and David Bennett and brewmaster Todd Boera, all co-owners, dubbed the English-style pub Fonta Flora in tribute to a lost village in western Burke County that thrived in the early 1900s.

Thompson unseats Hamer in District 4
If the numbers stay true, the Morganton City Council will see a new face in the District 4 seat. According to unofficial results, Challenger Ronnie Thompson defeated incumbent Alfred Hamer Jr., who had served on the city council for more than 30 years, with 63 percent of the vote. As of 8:39 p.m. Tuesday, Thompson had received 801 votes to Hamer’s 457.

Delay in Food and Nutrition Benefits can be up to 3 weeks
In Burke County, 635 households have yet to receive Food and Nutrition Benefits for the month of August. According to Burke County Department of Social Services Director Dorraine Hernandez, the NC Department of Health and Human Services made changes to NC FAST (North Carolina Families Accessing Benefits through Technology), which triggered major problems with the program across the state.

In an American Legion baseball playoff series postponed for five consecutive days by rain, Hickory Post 48 didn’t show any rust on Monday night. Post 48 used multiple-run innings in both games, scoring four in the sixth inning of Game 1 en route to an 8-0 inning before drilling visiting Kings Mountain 16-2 in five innings in the second game of a best-of-5 first-round series.

Growing up I, just like everyone else, could never figure out what I wanted to be. I wrestled with the ideas of becoming a doctor, lawyer, music educator or a sports agent. I even once thought I'd become president. Even with the uncertainty of what career endeavors my life had planned for me I knew one thing for sure: I wanted to make a difference.

I enjoy people. I enjoy making relationships that last a lifetime and memories that last forever. For me, it is my personal goal to make a positive impact on the individuals that I come across. Hopefully, one day, when it is all said and done and my book comes to a close I can say that I made a difference in someones life.

I'm a bit of a nut at times, but who doesn't like to have fun? I'm a writer, a musician, a lover of the arts, a dreamer, an inspirer, a motivator, an avid sports fan, an optimistic bundle of everything, a fraternity man, a Catamount, a gentleman, a blogger, a cook, a son, a brother and an uncle.
